around labor day are improv good afternoon, i'm mich nk is on the chances of the new eastern span of the bay bridge opening around labor day are improving. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. frank is on assignment. we just learned a new date for the opening of the bridge could be announced later this week. as kpix 5 first reported last night, federal officials have given the okay for a temporary fix to the cracked bolts and

that means traffic could start flowing across in a few weeks. kpix 5's cate caugiran reports. >> reporter: the oversight committee started the conference call at 10 a.m. now the feat of the bridge rests in their hands. kpix 5 obtained a letter from the federal highway administration that says, quote, we see no reason to delay opening the bridge to traffic the feds cleared caltrans to install a temporary fix for the 32 busted bolts on the bridge. the fix would be strategically placed three inch thick steel plates called shims. it would keep the swivel bearings from moving in an earthquake. it would ultimately use a saddle to stabilize the bridge permanently. last week highway patrol started signing up officers toward over time shifts for

traffic and security control at the bridge just in case they open on labor day weekend. the question is if the committee goes ahead with the labor day opening will they have enough time to install the shims, notify the public and businesses? we understand the committee won't decide today but will be holding a public hearing to announce their decision later this week. reporting from treasure island, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> the overriding goal is to get cars off the old span as soon as because of how easily it could fail in an earthquake. a dui suspect remarks while in custody leads police to the body of his girlfriend. her death is now being investigated as a homicide. the woman was found this morning just after 6 a.m. inside an apartment at 45 newell road in east palo alto. that's just west of highway 101. investigators went to the complex after a man being held in the san mateo county jail started talking about a possible crime. he had been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in

redwood city. police say the 48-year-old suspect is on parole. at this point he is not charged with murder. first the coroner will try to determine the exact cause of his 47-year-old girlfriend's death. police say the couple was living together. in other headlines in an hour we'll find out if a body found in vacaville on friday is sandra coke. the oakland police department will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. to announce the results. police say coke was last seen more than a week ago with randy alana, a person of interest. the driver of a party bus involved in a deadly accident has been arrested. the modified chevy van veered off interstate 280 near portola valley and hit a tree sunday night. the only passenger inside died. the chp says the driver, jason quinones left the scene and was found wandering nearby. he faces charges of manslaughter, dui and hit-and- run. >> reporter: the san francisco police displayed the narcotics and cash seized at a drug bust.

two people were arrested in the ingleside district this weekend after finding kilos of ecstasy. hayward city workers are striking right now. it's affecting a number of services including water treatment and street maintenance. city negotiators ended talks with the union last month but no new talks are scheduled. >> reporter: outside city hall in hayward workers are calling for justice. >> what do we want? >> a contract! >> when do we want it? >> now. >> reporter: the seiu charges hayward with unfair labor practices after the city declared an impasse last month without any new negotiating dates. >> for seven months they have not moved the bargaining position from these workers, the lowest paid workers of the city, they want them to give back $5 million out of their pay. >> reporter: the city is asking for a 17% concession in healthcare and pension benefits each year, affecting about 350 employees. >> we have asked all of our groups to contribute at the same level of concessions. many of our groups have already gotten there including our firefighters.

we are asking seiu to get to that same level. >> reporter: these workers say they make less than the average firefighter and their take-home pay was already cut last year by 12%. an additional 5% is just too much. >> we're not asking for anything unfair or unreasonable. we're just asking for fair wages and fair pay and to be treated respectfully. >> we've worked hard with our employees and the current proposal on the table actually shows cost of living increases and raises in the final three years of the five-year proposal. it just gets us the additional two years of savings that we need to help balance our budget. >> reporter: workers say the city should use money in the general fund for that. >> they have more revenue than they're saying. there are more revenues that come into the city budget that are expenditures. >> you have reserve in your home budget in case you need to replace your roof. same with the city. if there's a disaster, a structural issue with one of our facilities, we need to have reserves in case of emergencies. >> workers plan to stay off the job through thursday. the union says members will

continue to employee sensing services such as 911 -- essential services such as 911 services. both sides on the bart contract talks say they are waiting for a mediator to set a new schedule. both sides are eager to have new talks, no discussions since sunday. they still disagree on major issues. a judge granted a cooling-off period until october 10. transgender children now have a choice after governor brown signed the first of its kind law. starting january 1, the state's 6 million public school students can choose which restrooms they use and which sports teams to join based on their gender identity. opponents say the law could present privacy concerns for other students. a parking war playing out between neighboring bay area communities is nothing like the tv show it's pitting palo alto versus east palo alto. kiet do tells us one side just upped the ante. >> reporter: it's early evening

in east palo alto and the folks who live in these apartments along woodland avenue are just now coming home. the problem, there isn't an open parking spot for blocks. >> usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes maybe more like an hour to find parking. >> reporter: across the bridge into palo alto, and you'll find tons of shaded parking in front of multi-million dollar homes. so apartment residents park their cars here and walk another 20 minutes home. >> i typically am pretty respectful of the residents here. just because if i lived here i would not want people coming in and out. >> no overnight parking. >> reporter: palo alto homeowners complained to the city council about public urination, cigarette butts, syringes and condoms left behind. frank branson's home was burglarized last year. >> we can't help but wonder if these unknown persons who we see almost daily sitting in front of our homes are casing our homes for a possible burglary. >> reporter: they hope it will pressure east palo alto and the

apartments' owners to do something. >> this is not palo alto versus east palo alto. it's not us versus the drivers or us versus the parkers. >> who is going to bear the brunt of punishment in getting this sorted out is the people who can least afford it. >> reporter: kiet do, kpix 5. >> in developing news police do not suspect foul play in a deadly fall at turner field. police say it was raining last night during the atlanta braves game and it's possible ronald lee homer, jr., slipped. homer fell more than of 0 feet from the upper d.c. 60 feet from the upper deck of the stadium. his mother said her son was a life-long fan and she spoke to him before he fell. avery sebastian is doing better after a hit yesterday. he experienced a gasping kind of hit during a scrimmage monday when he and a teammate collided leaving the cal junior motionless for more than 15 minutes. he was then taken to the hospital. avery has since regained all movement in his extremities.

the intrusions from aggressive photographers on celebrities and their families. new details on the deadly flooding in colorado. a body found overnight is a missing 17-year-old. police believe rose hamm was swept away while trying to take shelter under a bridge last night. heavy rains have caused mud slides. this one wiped out homes and cars in a community near colorado springs. incredible video from illinois shows the aftermath of a pipeline explosion overnight. huge flames generated thick clouds of smoke and filled the sky. witnesses say they could see it from miles away. folks in the area were evacuated. the cause of the explanation is still unclear. more than 100 people scrambled for their lives as a crater swallowed part of a florida hotel about 10 miles from disneyworld. and from the collapse, a hero emerge. vinita nair tells us how a security guard jumped into action. >> reporter: it appears the sinkhole that swallowed part of

this building is no longer growing. executives at the summer bay resort near orlando say tests are being done to make sure nearby structures are safe. before the building ripped apart, guests inside could hear the walls creaking. >> the third floor was shifting and windows were popping out. they are kind of thinking possible sinkhole but they don't know. >> reporter: a security guard saw the ceiling sink and immediately started banging on doors. >> they opened the door and they're like, what's going on? are we being evicted from our property? i said no. you have to get out of the building because the building is coming apart. they were trying to grab things. i said please don't worry about your property. we'll take care of it later. >> reporter: he helped all 105 guests get out safely. many are calling him a hero. >> i'm just an average run of the mill person. i did what i had to do, and i would hope anybody else would have done the same thing. >> reporter: surrounding buildings were also evacuated as a precaution. the resort is allowing guests to go back in and collector

that belongings but the collapsed building remains off limits. therologieses to go back in and collect your belongs. >> we told people no one is going in. >> reporter: there were no signs a sinkhole was developing before sunday, according to the resort. tests done 15 years ago showed the ground was stable. vinita nair, kpix 5. seems like that happens quite a bit in florida. >> they have a lot of limestone under the ground there and the water just kind of erodes and before you know it you have a sinkhole. >> no one has hurt. >> no kidding. >> how's the weather here? sunshine around the bay area today breaking out even along the coastline now. we are seeing a little more sunshine out there. yeah, ocean beach cam looking good. haven't seen this much sunshine there in quite a while. finally high pressure building in overhead and the temperatures starting to warm up nicely. already 84 degrees in livermore. 67 very comfortable into san francisco. and 77 degrees in san jose. toward the afternoon hours, looking good. it will be warmer for most of us. a lot of sunshine outside maybe a couple of patches of fog

tonight along the coastline and just inside the bay but i think the valleys are going to stay clear. then near seasonal temperatures for now maybe a little bit above average as we head through thursday. high pressure now building in out of the desert southwest. as it does, it will crank up the temperatures especially away from the coastline but more sunshine today and these temperatures warming up very nicely outside so these numbers looking good as you head to the south bay about 84 degrees in san jose, 91 in morgan hill and 78 degrees in fremont. about 63 degrees in pacifica. east bay temperatures should be running up into the 80s and also the low 90s. so yeah, get a little bit hot especially well inland. and then inside the bay we have some 60s and some 70s. and mostly sunny skies into the afternoon hours. next couple of days we are going to see that warm sunshine getting hot in the interior valleys but then as we head in toward friday and looks like the weekend, the temperatures will cool down before warming up again this next week. by the way, we are starting something new here. we have the kpix 5 schoolcast. if you would like your school

pills.. then turned around and billed a bay area man ny 100-bucks! sue kwon shows an online company promised a free trial of diet pills and then charged a bay area man nearly $100. sue kwon shows us how consumerwatch fought the charge after uncovering the tricky marketing tactic behind it. >> reporter: walt landers had high hopes for the weight loss supplement he ordered online.
